Mackerel Sketch Rebecca Smith Jewellery Isles of Scilly

For the newest range of jewellery I was inspired to turn back to my old studies of mackerel. Mackerel have always been my favourite fish we get in Scilly, the fascination coming from the amazing colours and detail in those first few moments they are pulled in on a line. I don't truly see something until I start to study it, the detail with pencil, the colour with subsequent watercolour studies.

I wanted to convey these features of the mackerel that fascinated me across into the medium of silver. Movement has always been a theme in my jewellery, especially as my pieces are inspied by the natural environment in Scilly which is never stationary for a moment. From the design on paper to the finished piece in silver I strive to preserve the lines that suggest movement; the flight of the birds on the wing in my Scilly Seagulls and Swallows collections, and probably more importantly the fluidity of a fish swimming in this newest collection.

Rebecca Smith Jewellery Isles of Scilly

JAN 2015

FROM SILVER FISH TO ICONICALLY MACKEREL....

The second theme to explore in this range was colour; the vivid flash of the green and blue scales moments after the mackerel has left the water was something I wanted to encapsulate, a colour that quickly fades with time spent out the water. Emerald, Sapphire and Topaz were the precious materials that emulate, the greens, blues and silvers, and vivid flashes of mackerel in the water and transfer these intimations across to the jewellery.
